Vauxhall Motors FC 2-3 AFC Liverpool Post Match Interviews

Second pre-season game, second win for AFC Liverpool who come away with another game in their legs and will take confidence from a hard fought win. Three players instrumental to the performance and the result took the time to speak to us after the game.

Drew Lewis

Two games, two goals for you now in pre-season Drew, happy with your performances so far?

Yeah definitely, especially because I missed a lot of games last year so it’s nice to start off with a couple of goals. I want to score as many as I can to take into the season and then see what happens from there.

Those that didn’t make it to the game today will have missed your goal of course but also the header from the edge of the area that struck the bar, you don’t see many players even attempt them.

I know it was unlucky that wasn’t it? I was hoping to bring it down and see what was on but their lad was running at me so I thought to just go for the header – wasn’t quite on target but not too far away.

Some supporters will remember you from your spell here last season, maybe didn’t get as many games as you would have liked – are you hoping to get more of a run of games this season?

Yeah, well I’ve been looking after myself a bit more for this season and had a bad injury last year and had another one the year before so been doing work on strengthening the areas that have given me problems in the past so hopefully that’s behind me now and there are no difficulties going in to next season.

Chris Brady

It was a good run out for you and the lads today then Chris, second game for you but first full 90?

Yeah started against South Sefton, started at full back that game but got a full game today starting at centre half but moved to right back late on.

Well full back or centre back, you were my man of the match today but do you have a position you prefer playing out of the two?

Purely to play football, I’d say right back because that allows me to play a bit more but I prefer to be in the mixer at centre back so I’d say that’s my preferred position overall.

You’ve come back in after joining midway through last season, I think Maine Road away was your debut for AFC Liverpool but was your first game at this level. You stood out again that day and didn’t look out of place – are you looking to going again at pushing on to prove yourself?

Yeah definitely, having the opportunity then to step up two leagues and now to have my first full season at a higher level I want to show that I belong here and I can’t wait for the season to start.

Callum Schorah

Really good performance from you and from the other lads today. Just on your game though, you start out in the forward line and finish the game at left back – what was that like?

It was a bit different to what I’m used to obviously but as we got towards the end of the game we were ahead so we wanted to see it out and get the win even if it is pre-season so it was a good tactical switch from the managers and carried out well by the lads. Still managed to get forward though with that shot at the end.

Glad you mentioned that shot at the end, it was about 35 yards out, it came just after Drew’s header that hit the crossbar and then you hit the bar yourself with some effort. Have you ever struck one as clean as that?

No, not for a while any way but it’s a quality save from their keeper, can’t remember hitting many cleaner actually. Drew has his header come out off the bar, it fell kindly for me and it looked like it was flying in but fair play to him, he managed to get something on it and tip it on to the bar.

You’re another player that’s returned after impressing last season, the supporters really took to you, appreciated your efforts and could see you were a player. What did you make of your own performances last season?

I think I started well, the performances were there and I always give it my all whoever we’re playing but didn’t score as many as I would have liked. I came back in after my injury towards the end of the season and started to find my feet and put a few goals away as well including a couple of really important ones.

On goals then, have you set yourself a target for this season?

I wouldn’t say I’ve got a specific target in mind for myself, I think I just want to create as many chances for the lads as I can and put away as many as I can for myself.

Thanks to the lads for taking the time.

Ashville away next. Saturday 21st July.
