Lower Breck FC 4-2 AFC Liverpool

On 24 hours notice, AFC Liverpool and Breck Road FC met at JMO Sports Park. On 24 hours notice, our fans turned up in great numbers to support the team. The conditions and facilities were fantastic with Skelmersdale doing it’s best impression of a La Manga summer training camp.

The match kicked off at 2 pm with AFC Liverpool having much of the early possession, keeping the ball well and declaring their intentions as a footballing side. Both teams had a couple of half chances in front of goal with the strikers failing to make their opportunities count.

Against the run of play, Lower Breck broke well with Jamie Henders latching on to a pass and putting the ball beyond keeper Dom Garner. Henders then got into a one-on-one situation with Garner standing up well and saving the first effort. Unable to parry the ball clear however, Henders had a tap in for his second goal right on half time.

AFC Liverpool fielded a changed side and a changed kit for the second half. Lower Breck started the half looking to stamp their authority on the game but AFC defended well. The next goal took a moment of magic, again from Jamie Henders as he brought the ball down deftly on the turn and hammered into the roof of the net to seal his hat-trick. Henders completed his goal collection with another good finish midway through the second half.

AFC kept their heads despite the scoreline. They played some of their best football of the game, passing into dangerous areas and winning a series of corners. The determination of the lads paid off after a series of quick interchanges of passing in the final third. Michael Boyle capped of an impressive performance as he trapped the ball on the edge of the area and rifled his effort straight into the top right corner to make it 4-1. Steven Milne then kept his composure and converted from the spot for AFC’s second, closing the curtain on the day’s goals.

After 90 minutes in the sapping heat, Lower Breck ran out 4-2 winners but there were many signs of encouragement for The Reds.

We were able to get the thoughts of AFC Liverpool Manager Chris Stammers after the game. “I’m gutted to lose any game but both sides I fielded today gave me signs of encouragement.”

On the positives taken from facing a strong team so early in his sides development, Chris said “Lower Breck have a strong midfield and their striker displayed his quality with 4 goals. Our lads showed great commitment though and kept working and got our goals in the second half. They will only improve as they play more games and get to know each other better.”

Looking towards the next match, Chris is hopeful. “I can now pick a combined squad to face Ashton on Tuesday, perhaps with a couple of additions I’m looking at too.”

Congratulations to Lower Breck and best of luck for the coming season. Massive thanks to our tremendous support who stayed to clap the lads off for their efforts at the final whistle.

We now look forward to Ashton Town on Tuesday 11th July 7.45 pm Kick-off.
