Interview with Stuart Keir – Assistant Manager

Chris Stammers has appointed his Assistant Manager at AFC Liverpool, Stuart Keir.

Stuart joins the Reds from Litherland Remyca, and he took time out from a club training session to talk about his coaching and his ambitions for the team this season:

Welcome to AFC Liverpool Stuart, can you tell us a bit about your career thus far?

Thanks, it’s great to be here at AFC Liverpool. Well, I started off as a player at Marine, firstly in the youth system, then moved up to their reserves and then their first team. I then went to play in the League of Wales for Flint Town United for a couple of years in the Welsh Prem, and then came back and played for Prescot Cables, Formby and Bootle, so I’ve played at Evo-Stik and North West Counties level.

So what prompted the move into coaching?

Well, I got into coaching quite early, while I was still playing. I went over to America for a while to coach after I stopped playing, and when I came back, I coached the youth team at Marine. After that, I joined up with a former captain of AFC Liverpool, Phil Stafford. I’ve been working with Staffo as his assistant manager for the last six seasons, firstly at Maghull where we won the West Cheshire League, and then the cup the year after. Following that, we both moved on to Litherland Remyca, where we spent the last two and a half years.

You had a strong season at Remy last year didn’t you?

Yes, we had a really good run with Remyca last year. We came third and made it to the playoff final and it was disappointing not to come up, but it was really enjoyable. We were competing against teams with big budgets so we did really really well. Obviously Staffo then moved on to join Bootle at the end of the season, and when the opportunity came up for me to come to AFC Liverpool with Chris, I jumped at the chance.

How do you know Chris?

I know Chris from work. We both coached at a company called Coaching Connexions so he knows me well, so yeah I jumped at the chance to come to AFC Liverpool – it’s a big club and this level is the next step for me and my development. I’m also a massive Red and so it’s a natural fit for me to come here as a Liverpool fan and be part of it!

How is training going ahead of the new season?

It’s going really well. Its early days but we are working with some really talented players. There will be new faces this year. Some have experience at North-West Counties level and above, and some are young local lads who have shone in local leagues and are ready to step up. We have high standards and every single one of these lads are here to play for the shirt, so we’ll make sure we play football the right way, showing the energy and effort AFC Liverpool is known for!

Thanks very much Stuart. All the best to you and Chris for the coming season! YNWA
